  • Women Vets – Higher Ground

Around the world, the most natural act of becoming a mother can be a life-threatening event. In developing nations, 1 woman dies every 2 minutes from complications during pregnancy and childbirth, and pregnancy is the leading cause of death among 15-19 year olds. But it’s not only a problem in developing nations. In the United States, 2 women die every day giving birth. It’s a preventable tragedy—in fact, 98% of these deaths are preventable.

Organizations like Every Mother Counts and the UNFPA understand that investing in the health and welfare of women is an investment in the larger community. With each maternal death, communities lose a caretaker, a leader, an educator. Because of that, organizations like EMC and UNFPA are on the front lines working toward increasing access to trained medical professionals in rural and developing areas.

“It is not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see”
